What if there was a way to revolutionize how we teach literacy? And what if that new model could live right on a smartphone?
That reading revolution is about to hit the City of Brotherly Love. XPRIZE is a global leader of designing and implementing innovative competition models to solve the world’s grandest challenges, including adult literacy. Currently, the Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE presented by Dollar General Literacy Foundation is a global competition focused on identifying a mobile application that can empower adults with low-literacy with the skills they need to read more proficiently in just 12 months. Philadelphia has been selected as a pilot city for the program, and we’re in need of volunteers.
Imagine not being able to fill out a job application or read a medical prescription. Unfortunately, that’s the reality for nearly a quarter of the city’s adult population. But you can help Philadelphia adults with low-literacy develop the skills they need to compete in today’s increasingly knowledge-based economy—just by using a free phone application. Volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles, including recruiters, coordinators and team leaders, and to oversee the intake of participating learners. Become an Adult Literacy XPRIZE volunteer.
