The Tocqueville Society is named after 19th-century French diplomat Alexis de Tocqueville, who recognized, applauded and immortalized the distinct American voluntary spirit. Founded in 1984 by two of our own local leaders, Ambassador Walter Annenberg and John C. Haas, our regional Tocqueville Society is based on the premise that “Leaders Lead”, with members giving $10,000 or more annually to United Way. Benefits include invitations to exclusive events and networking opportunities. To learn more, call 215-665-2458 or email
MILLION DOLLAR ROUNDTABLE
The Million Dollar Roundtable honors our most generous philanthropic leaders. Nationally, nearly 500 extraordinary leaders have made gifts of $1 million or more to local United Ways, driving impact and transforming lives. Locally, 30 members have made this exceptional commitment to building a stronger region.
In honor of long-time donors Philip and Patricia Kind, the Kind Society provides benefits including special events, networking and volunteer opportunities year-round. View pictures from our past Kind Society events. To learn more, call 215-665-2458 or email
I trust that from year to year the community’s needs change, so I leave it in the capable hands of United Way to invest the impact money
in the right direction.

Donating stocks and other securities
Using your existing portfolio of stocks and other securities to make a charitable donation is simple.
There are two ways to do this.
Option 1: Have your broker notify United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey about your gift at 800-417-8742 or and initiate a DTC Transfer using the following information:
Credit to Vanguard Brokerage Services | Sub Account, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey Account # 60253979 DTC# 0062 (The donor’s name must appear in the trailer information of the DTC transfer.)
Option 2: Transfer the securities directly
The securities must be endorsed by the registered owner. The registered owner must consult his or her broker or bank to obtain a “medallion signature guarantee” for the back of the certificate. A notary public cannot provide a medallion signature guarantee.
The registered owner should insert “United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (EIN 23-1556045)” as the transferee party on the back of the certificate.
The registered owner should insert “Vanguard Brokerage Services” as the attorney-in-fact on the back of the certificate. Once the back of the certificate is completed with a medallion signature guarantee, it can be sent to United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, P.O. Box 15760, Philadelphia, PA 19103
A few things to note about the donation of stocks and securities:
In order to recover expenses incurred to raise, collect and allocate contributions, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey charges a cost recovery fee of 12.5% on each donated gift.
The date of the gift is the day the securities pass to United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s control.
United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey cannot accept donations of “controlled” or “restricted” securities, as these terms are defined by the Securities Act of 1933. Please consult your attorney if you have any questions or are interested in donating such securities.
United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey cannot accept gifts of partial shares of stock, nor can United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey refund shares of stock to donors.
For income tax purposes, the deductible value is the mean between the high and low quoted selling price on the date of the gift.
Unless otherwise requested, any excess funds valued above the original pledge commitment will be directed to UWGPSNI’s Impact Fund. In the case of payments creating a balance of more than $100, you will receive a statement for the remaining pledge amount.

Make a charitable distribution through your IRA
Are you 70 ½ years old or older?
If so, you can take advantage of a simple way to give back and receive tax benefits in return.
You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity, such as ours, without having to pay income taxes on the gift.
You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize. You also have more flexibility giving to multiple groups in a single transaction through our Donor Choice program.
If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable distribution gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.
If you’d like to give to United Way through an IRA Charitable Distribution, please contact Alex Hoffmaster at or call 215-665-2538.
