United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey recently welcomed Mary Shaffer to the team as Chief Development Officer.

What drew you to United Way’s mission?  

This is an exciting time in United Way’s history, and I look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to advance equity and prosperity in our region. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to secure urgently needed resources for United Way that will help eliminate multi-generational poverty and enhance our region's quality of life.

How or why did you get engaged with fundraising as a career path? 

I want to take a very practical role in helping to build a better world.

What’s something that you wish more people knew in regards to your work?

Making a philanthropic gift to invest in a better future for our community brings donors great pride and satisfaction.  It brings me joy to facilitate such meaningful and impactful gifts.

Long before I was a fundraiser, I was a professional ballroom dancer.
