Role Summary

United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s (UWGPSNJ) mission is to end poverty and expand opportunity for all. The Philanthropy Officer is a valuable member of the UWGPNSJ Development Team and will be an integral part of expanding UWGPSNJ’s donor and prospect pipeline for current and future revenue generation in service of our fight against poverty. The Philanthropy Officer reports to the Director, Development and regularly collaborates with colleagues across UWGPSNJ. This role is designed for a nonprofit professional seeking to grow their skills in frontline fundraising; training and professional development will be provided with a focus on major gift fundraising.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary liaison for key events in the Office of the President/CEO, constituents to ensure effective execution of events.
  • Develop and execute strategies, within the assigned portfolio, to increase annual revenue, attract and retain donors, increase donor loyalty, and promote year-round engagement of prospects and donors with a specific emphasis on Leadership, Social Venture Partners, and Tocqueville Society populations; complete a minimum of 75 donor and prospect visits annually.
    • Tocqueville Society (50%)
      • Through personal visits and outreach, complete discovery, qualification, solicitation, and stewardship of assigned portfolio with the goal of identifying donors and prospects for elevation to major gifts portfolio.
      • In collaboration with the Director, Development, determine strategies to deepen relationships Tocqueville Society (ADT) donors at $10,000-$24,999.
      • Complete limited administrative duties associated with personal visits and outreach; ensure accurate and timely maintenance of related account records in the ANDAR database.
    • Leadership Donors (25%)
        • Through personal visits and outreach, complete discovery, qualification, solicitation, and stewardship of assigned portfolio with the goal of identifying donors and prospects for increased support of UWGPSNJ’s mission.
        • Complete limited administrative duties associated with personal visits and outreach; ensure accurate and timely maintenance of related account records in the ANDAR database.
    • Social Venture Partners (25%)
          • Through personal visits and outreach, complete discovery, qualification, solicitation, and stewardship of assigned portfolio. Collaborate with SVP team on joint prospect visits and developing fundraising strategy.
          • Complete limited administrative duties associated when involved with personal visits and outreach of the SVP donor and prospect population; ensure accurate and timely maintenance of related account records in the ANDAR database.
  • Build relationships across functions and levels within the organization including but not limited to Office of the President, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing & Communications.
  • Stay apprised of trends or issues, which could impact fund development, in relevant industries that affect business climate or culture, and the economic environment.
  • Develop an authentic external presence within the business and non-profit communities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, experience in event planning and ability to work cross-departmentally.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines, solve problems, and communicate concisely for internal/external relations.
  • Ability to produce content for print, website, and social media in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with donors, vendors, staff, community partners, volunteers, and the public.
  • The ability to work proactively and motivate and lead others.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or requisite experience equal to a 4-year degree required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of professional experience in nonprofit organizations, including fundraising, project, or program management.
  • Ability to effectively utilize database systems within a data-driven and evidence-based organization.
  • Sincere passion for and understanding of UWGPSNJ’s mission and commitment to improving the lives of Philadelphians; ability to be a compelling ambassador for the organization’s values.
  • Collaborative and engaging communication style in working with people of many backgrounds.
  • Unfailing discretion in dealing with sensitive material.
  • Demonstrate required skills or experience on core competencies in accordance with UWW & UWGPSNJ Competency Framework: Donor-Centric, Mission-Focused, Relationship Oriented, Collaborator, Results Driven, Brand Steward.
  • Other or Additional Notes on Functional Competencies Include:
    • Effective fundraising – donor-focused and results-driven with a relentless focus on gaining financial resources to support UWGPSNJ’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities.
    • Strategic relationship management – develops and maintains strategic relationships that generate the financial resources to support UWGPSNJ. Builds trust and donor commitment to UWGPSNJ.
    • Entrepreneurial and innovative – creatively seeks new opportunities to generate revenue and other resources that provide additional value to the organization.
    • Contribute to the product development process, able to assess donor’s interest, and accurately convey those to a cross-functional team. Includes strong strategic thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Physical requirements for the position are in alignment with stated job functions
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required based on event schedule.
