Contrary to popular belief, obsessing over happiness doesn’t always actually make us happy – in fact, it’s more likely to have the reverse effect. But pursuing meaning in life? That’s a different story. Experts agree: living a meaningful and happy life is as simple as storytelling.

Through storytelling, we have the power to make our own narrative, our own meaning of the important events in our lives. These stories clarify our life’s purpose, our connections with other people and how we contribute to something larger than ourselves. And when we share these stories, we champion causes, drive real change and inspire others to action.

We all have a story to tell, from packing emergency food boxes to raising awareness about the importance of early grade reading. Your story is your legacy of making a difference and we want to help you share it.

Join us for StorySlam: “Volunteering in the Community,” hosted by the Greater Philadelphia Corporate Volunteer Council* (GPCVC) and WHYY, in collaboration with First Person Arts, and be part of United Way’s first StorySlam. Celebrate the volunteers at your organization by inviting them to kick-off National Volunteer Week at our StorySlam. Share five minutes of your life and connect with people who appreciate a well-told tale. You can prepare your story in advance, sign up at the door or step up to the mic in the moment!

When we connect and contribute to something beyond ourselves – our neighborhoods, our environment, our students’ futures – we not only add meaning to our day-to-day routines, but we help change lives and strengthen communities, one child, one adult and one family at a time.
