Delaware County Local Initiatives

At United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ), we believe that everyone deserves a quality education from cradle to career, a job that pays a family-sustaining wage and good health. That’s why, through our Impact Fund, we invest in the building blocks of a good life - education, income and health – and provide community members with opportunities for better lives.

Education

For many children in our area, their education is the greatest economic equalizer they will ever know. At United Way, we improve the quality of early childhood education centers to prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn through our Success By 6® program. We ensure students can read at grade level by third grade and help them transition successfully from middle to high school. We’re also focused on equipping high school graduates with the 21st century skills they need to graduate college- and career-ready.

Income

United Way helps working adults gain financial stability through education, asset development and job training. Through the Lubert Individual Development Account (IDA) Program, individuals save for home ownership or higher education with the help of matched funds to secure a more stable financial future. In addition, our work through the Job Opportunity Investment Network (JOIN) addresses the gap between the un- and under-employed and the needs of employers. JOIN equips low-wage workers with skills for employment that pays a family-sustaining wage, while also meeting the needs of local businesses.

Health

At United Way, we believe that everyone deserves access to the resources and options they need to lead healthy lives at any age. We also believe that our growing senior population has the right to age in good health, with dignity in their homes and communities. That’s why we work to improve the quality of senior centers and launched Aging at Home – A Community Network in Delaware County –all to ensure that older adults have access to services and resources that allow them to do just that.
