Jim Cawley is president and CEO of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey (UWGPSNJ), where he leads the organization’s work to improve Education, Income and Health for the region’s most vulnerable populations, while also strengthening the regional safety net.
Jim oversees UWGPSNJ’s mission to harness, leverage and strategically invest the collective power of more than 100,000 donors, advocates and volunteers, to drive measurable, lasting Impact that none of us can achieve alone. Through the Impact Fund, UWGPSNJ works to ensure children start kindergarten ready to learn; students read at grade level by the end of third grade; youth graduate from high school ready for college and career; households have the income and assets necessary to be financially stable and economically independent; and individuals and families have access to resources they need to lead healthy lives and have their basic needs met.
Jim has spent the majority of his career in the service of others, both regionally and nationally, developing productive relationships and leading large groups of constituents to success. As the 32nd Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Jim honed a unique understanding of how United Way’s Impact areas connect and how strategic improvements in Education, Income and Health can lift the entire region. He also brought government and community leaders together through his work with various statewide commissions and partnerships, as well as recovery efforts stemming from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. Prior to being elected to statewide office, Jim served on the Bucks County Board of Commissioners, as Chief of Staff to State Senator Tommy Tomlinson, and as a member of the board of the Bristol Township School District.
In the community, Jim has served on the board of directors for Lower Bucks Hospital and as trustee of Bucks County Community College. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia and Manor College, as well as a Commonwealth Trustee of Temple University Board of Trustees.
A native of Levittown, PA, Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a law degree from Temple University. He resides in Wrightstown, PA, with his wife Suzanne and their son Nicky.
Karen Cleary is responsible for United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s finance, technology, operations, and human resources. In this role, Karen oversees the organization’s campaign processing, information technology support and internal operations.
Karen joined United Way in 2003 as Controller and became Director of Finance in 2005. In 2008, she was appointed Vice President of Finance, and in 2014, she was named Chief Finance and Administrative Officer.
Prior to joining United Way, Karen worked as an audit senior at Arthur Andersen, LLP, where she specialized in healthcare and not-for-profit clients. She also held the role of manager of expense administration at CIGNA. Karen is a graduate of Penn State University and is a CPA. She is a member of the PICPA.
Senior Vice President of Impact and Innovation
Kevin Dow is the Senior Vice President of Impact and Innovation at United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, where he leads the regional Impact agenda, developing and executing strategies that address critical needs in local communities to ensure youth are successful and individuals as well as families are self-reliant across Southeastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey.
Prior to joining United Way, Kevin served for five years as Chief Operating Officer and Senior Deputy Commerce Director for the City of Philadelphia’s Commerce Department, where he led strategic efforts to help both small businesses and major corporations in Philadelphia thrive, ultimately increasing economic development in the city. Previously, Kevin worked in both financial services and community investment at Wachovia Corporation. He also has 26 years of experience serving on nonprofit boards of diverse organizations within the economic development, workforce, education, religious, and cultural sectors.
Currently, Kevin serves as the Chair of the Job Opportunity Investment Network (JOIN), the boards of the Fleisher Art Memorial, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Philadelphia Academies Inc., and the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation. He is also a mayoral appointee to the Council for College and Career Success.
As a native Philadelphian and a proud graduate of Central High School, Kevin received his B.A. in Finance from Morehouse College. He later earned his M.B.A. in Management from Saint Joseph’s University. Kevin resides in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia with his wife and two children.
Annie Madonia is the Senior Vice President of Philanthropy and Strategic Planning at United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. She is responsible for leading and managing all of the United Way's fundraising programs and initiatives, volunteer engagement, affinity groups and development events. She is a member of the executive team, overseeing management of the regional organization, and is responsible for volunteer leadership including the Regional Campaign Cabinet, Resource Development Strategy Committee and the 100th Anniversary Planning Committee. She manages the Nominating, Governance and Board Development Committee, as well as the organization’s long range and strategic planning initiatives. She is also a member of the staff Diversity and Inclusion Council.
Before joining the United Way, Annie served as Vice President of Development and Board Relations for The Philadelphia Orchestra; prior to that, she spent 12 years at The Cleveland Orchestra, ultimately serving as Director of Development from 2000-2007. She has also held development positions at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Inc. and Carnegie Hall. A native of New York City, Annie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Wellesley College.
As Vice President and Regional Executive Director, John Emge oversees UWGPSNJ's work in southern New Jersey. With more than 30 years of United Way experience, John has worked throughout South Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania. In that time, he managed fundraising efforts exceeding $35 million and successfully transitioned United Ways in Atlantic and Cape May Counties from pass-through funders to strategic social investors. John played an integral role in UWGPSNJ’s 2012 merger, serving as co-chair of the design team. Now, as part of the organization’s Senior Leadership Team, he is focused on advancing UWGPSNJ’s regional work and galvanizing volunteers to drive Impact forward with shared vision and a cohesive strategy.
John began his United Way career in West Virginia as finance manager for the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley. From there he returned to the area where he was raised – Philadelphia – working as a campaign associate and eventually being promoted to assistant director of campaign for United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He then moved over to United Way of Burlington County, and as campaign director he successfully raised annual revenue from $3 million to $4.2 million over his nine-year tenure.
John is active on the following Boards: NJ 211 Partnership; Stockton University’s Center for Community Engagement Advisory Board, Stockton University’s Business Advisory Board; Institute for Community Development; and the Coalition for a Safe Community (treasurer). He is currently president of the United Ways of New Jersey.
John is married with three children. He holds a B.A. degree in accounting from Wheeling Jesuit University.
As Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs, Carly Keeny leads the integrated communications efforts of United Way, including market research, public and media relations, marketing communications, digital and social media, public affairs, executive communications and advertising.
Throughout her career, Carly has created and led communications programs for the College of Engineering at Villanova University, as well as for clients Verizon Wireless and Bayer Environmental Science in her time with Tierney. She started her communications and public affairs career with Word Work Inc. in Lansdale, PA, where she focused on content development for local government, education, and small business clients.
Carly is a graduate of American University in Washington D.C., where she earned a degree in political science, as well as Villanova University, where she earned a master’s degree in communication. She is a volunteer on the planning committee for Women Against Abuse’s annual Dish it Up! event and is active with the Mount Network of Mount St. Joseph Academy.
